1. Baraat
Groom, his family & friends parade to the
ceremony site, while showing off their dance
moves & merrymaking!
2. Milni
Groom is welcomed with a short prayer
performed by Bride’s mother. The Bride’s
family welcomes the Groom’s family – the
families embrace each other!
3. Ganesh Puja
The ceremony begins with a ‘puja’ (prayer)
to Lord Ganesha, the remover of all
obstacles & provider of good luck.
4. Kanya Aagman
Bride makes her grand entrance & is escorted
down the aisle to meet Groom at the Mandap.
5. Jai Mala
Bride & Groom exchange flower garlands to
signify their choice of one another.
6. Kanya Daan
Bride’s parents give away their daughter by
placing her right hand into Groom’s right hand,
entrusting Groom to care for & protect her.
Groom’s scarf is tied to Bride.
This signifies their marital bond.
7. Agni Phera
The sacred fire signifies purity & a source
of universal energy. Bride & Groom complete
four ‘pheras’ (circles). The four basic goals
of human life are Dharma, Artha, Kama & Moksha.
8. Saptapadi
Groom & Bride take seven steps
together. Each step signifies a vow
that they promise to uphold together.
9. Mangal Sutra
& Sindoor
Groom ties a ‘mangal sutra’
(sacred necklace) around bride’s neck,
& applies ‘sindoor’ (red powder) in the
parting of her hair to symbolize his
commitment to her.
10. Aashirwad
The newlyweds seek the blessings
of their parents & are showered with rice
& flowers!
11. Bidaai
Bride’s family bids her farewell among
tears of joy & sadness. She throws a fistful
of rice behind her shoulder wishing for
good health, wealth, happiness & prosperity.
