Dasara, derived from the Sanskrit words “Dasha” (meaning ten) and “Hara” (meaning defeat), signifies the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana after ten days of battle. It also commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The festival typically falls in September or October and extends over ten days, culminating in the grand celebration of Vijayadashami, the tenth day.

  1. Golu Display: A prominent tradition during Dasara is the Golu display. This involves setting up a stepped arrangement of dolls and figurines that narrate mythological stories and showcase cultural heritage. Inviting friends and family to view the Golu is a cherished custom.
  2. Ayudha Puja: On the ninth day, people perform Ayudha Puja, where they pay homage to their tools, vehicles, and instruments. This is a symbolic act of recognizing the role of tools in their lives. It is a common practice to invite close friends and neighbors to be a part of this ritual.
  3. Durga Puja: In West Bengal, Durga Puja is celebrated with elaborate processions, cultural performances, and grand pandal decorations. People invite each other to witness the beautiful idol of Goddess Durga and partake in the festivities.
  4. Ramlila: In Northern India, Ramlila performances depicting the life of Lord Rama are organized. These open-air theatrical events are widely attended, and inviting loved ones to watch the play is a gesture of sharing the cultural heritage.
  5. Garba is an exuberant and vibrant dance form that originates from the state of Gujarat, India. It is performed during the nine nights of Navratri, a Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of the goddess Durga. The word “Garba” itself means “womb,” symbolizing the source of life. The dance is characterized by dancers forming concentric circles and moving gracefully to the rhythmic beats of the dhol (drum) and clapping.
