“Arangetram,  A mentee masters the art !”

“The invitation to this august occasion is not just to broadcast the proficiency of the pupil, but it’s also a way through which the pupil pays homage to his/her guru for their belief in them. For the pains they took to teach, and the efforts they made to nurture the pupil’s talent. It also marks the significant event of  forming another strong link in the long unbroken chain of preserving our culture and heritage for the future generations to learn and enjoy.”

Bharatnatyam, the legacy of a dance art form nurtured and bestowed to us by our antecedents. The origin of the dance form is traced to as long back as 2nd century CE in the temple town of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu and is widely acknowledged as a classical dance form in the entire world. It is a solo dance performance accompanied by a small troup of classical musicians in a combination of vocal and instrumental artist. The Guru-Shishya parampara plays a vital role in conserving and propagating the art form and till date is followed accross the world to transfer the art form into the safekeeping of next generation artists.  This art is a heritage, a culmination of many dreams, passions, traditions and epic sagas, oh so carefully nurtured generation after generation. One such integral and unbroken tradition is ARANGETRAM. The literal Tamil translation of Arangetram means ascending the stage.  It is a momentous occasion where the Guru presents his pupil to the public as the central and sole performer for the very first time. It is a joyous occasion where a student under the able guidance and mentorship of a Guru has mastered the nuances and intricacies of the dance and is now ready to take their rightful place in the spotlight on the world stage.

What does Arangetram mean?

Arangetram means starting a new thing which is derived from the Malayalam language and used when someone performs their first classical dance on stage. Arangetram is a tradition followed by all classical dancers once a dancer has completed his/her training then he/she will be introduced by their trainee for solo performance on stage. The dancer needs to compete with others by giving his/her solo performance then he/she may get eligible to pass on the knowledge of classical dance to others. Nowadays arangetram not only became famous for classical dances but it became a ritual for all traditional performances like Singing, Playing Tabla & Mrudangam. Everyone desires to mark their talent, and arangetram is becoming a stage to showcase their performance. Just like other college ceremonies arangetram became a big stage for performers.
