The Land of Red River and Blue Hills Assam has its wedding traditions deeply rooted in culture. Weddings of colourful Assammese culture are a bouquet of many pre and post wedding rituals. Pre-wedding ritual Juran Diya is where the groom’s mother visits the bride house to give betel leaves and nuts, next she performs Tel Diya where she puts betel leaves and nuts over the bride’s head and bathes her in oil and in the end applies sindoor on her forehead. She also proceeds to give extensive gifts of wedding trousseau and jewelry to her soon to be daughter-in-law.

Then comes Pani Taula where the women go to the nearest water body for a ceremonial bath. Daiyan Diya is a sweet romantic ceremony where sweet curd is sent to the bride from the groom’s home only to be eaten half and sent back for the groom to finish it. Nuwoni is akin to the Haldi ceremony of central India. In Assamese culture reception is held before the wedding as and when the groom arrives with his barat Procession and then comes the The Biya, the actual wedding ceremony.
