The boy prays to Surya Deva for blessings to fulfill his duties diligently, cultivate virtue, maintain punctuality and act with meticulous care.

A twig, from a peepal tree, is placed into the child’s right hand, signifying his entry into the brahmacharya.

The boy seeks bhiksha from his mother and other ladies, symbolizing the ancient tradition where a vatu sustains himself through the practice of receiving bhiksha.

The boy introduces himself by paying obeisance to the elders seeking their blessings.

The blessings of the child’s ancestors are obtained, prior to the Brahmopadesha ceremony.

Sumangalis are given Mangala Dravya by the mother of Vatu to seek blessings.

The sacred thread, made of three strands, is placed across the child’s left shoulder by his father while chanting mantras.

The boy is fed by his mother before he begins his journey as a Vatu. This bhojana becomes a symbolic event. Five boys who have completed their Brahmopadesha join him in this meal, cementing their friendship.
Brahmopadesha:
The boy’s father, becoming his guru, whispers the powerful Gayathri mantra to him, marking his initiation as a Dwija.
